FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE PROMOTION AND CONNECTION OF AGYIA LAKE, THE MYHS, AND THE SURROUNDING AREA – GENERAL MANAGEMENT PLAN

Programmatic agreement between the Region of Crete, Municipality of Chania, Management Body of Samaria National Park – Western Crete, and the Technical University of Crete, where P.AN.ETAI.K. S.A. participates in the Joint Monitoring Committee for the execution of the contract.

The purpose of this proposal is the formulation of a General Management Plan to integrate into a coherent whole already executed projects in the area, to highlight and connect Agyia Lake and the Small Hydroelectric Station (MYHS) with the wider area, and to draft a broader framework for the comprehensive management and promotion of the landscape and the area based on the principles of sustainability at spatial, social, and economic levels. More specifically, the aim is, through gentle interventions, to make the area:

  • Accessible to nature lovers, hikers, cyclists, mountaineers, trainers, and trainees
  • A recreational space for the residents of the area
  • An educational space regarding fauna, flora, the water cycle (geomorphology of the area), and renewable energy sources
  • A supra-local attraction hub and a node of cycling and nature trails, preserving and highlighting its unique features

Implementation Period: xx months
