In the context of the integration of the Regional Development Company of Crete (PANETAIK SA) as an Associated Member of the Network of Cities with Lakes, the President of the Network, Mr. Andreas Stergiou, visited the Small Hydroelectric Power Plant (SHPP) and Lake Agia, marking the beginning of the Network’s new collaboration with PANETAIK S.A. and the Agia SHPP.
During his visit, Mr. Stergiou was guided through the Plant’s facilities and was briefed by the Director of PANETAIK S.A., Ms. Petrantonaki, on the project being implemented at Lake Agia and the historic hydroelectric plant—a unified technical and environmental complex that contributed decisively to the region’s water management and the electrification of the city of Chania.
Mr. Stergiou expressed his admiration for the work being carried out in Agia, emphasizing that it constitutes an exceptional example of connecting the natural environment, energy heritage, and sustainable development, especially in an era of major environmental challenges, including water resource management. At the same time, Mr. Stergiou reiterated the Network’s commitment to actively support this new endeavor and to contribute to the broader enhancement of PANETAIK S.A.’s participation as a new member of the Network.
The inclusion of the Agia SHPP and PANETAIK S.A. in the Network of Cities with Lakes creates a new framework of cooperation, aiming to showcase Lake Agia as a model site for environmental awareness, education, and mild tourism development. Within this framework, joint actions are being planned regarding environmental education, the promotion of green energy, the development of educational and cultural routes, as well as participation in national and European sustainable development programs.
The Director of PANETAIK S.A., Ms. Petrantonaki, warmly thanked Mr. Stergiou for his visit and the trust he showed from the very beginning in the efforts unfolding in Agia, noting that recognition by the Network is a distinct honor and a strong motivation to continue the company’s work.
The two sides have already begun planning joint initiatives for the upcoming September, aiming to implement actions with a meaningful impact on the environment, the local community, and the sustainable development of the region.
