The Regional Development Company of Crete – PANETAIK S.A. announces its admission as an associate member of the Network of Cities with Lakes, strengthening its strategy for the protection, promotion and sustainable utilisation of Lake Agyia and the exhibition space of the Agyia Small Hydroelectric Power Station.
The admission of PANETAIK S.A. to the Network marks the beginning of a dynamic framework of cooperation with local government bodies and organisations from across Greece, aiming at the exchange of expertise, the development of joint initiatives and the promotion of integrated sustainable development interventions.
At the heart of this collaboration is the promotion of the artificial Lake Agyia — a significant natural resource of the Chania region — in conjunction with the utilisation and showcasing of the Agyia Small Hydroelectric Power Station (SHPS), a historic and energy landmark of particular importance for local development and the energy transition. These two projects form part of a comprehensive and complex technical works together with the intake and discharge pipelines, originally designed to manage the area’s water resources and provide electricity to the city of Chania.
The interconnection of these two elements — natural ecosystem and energy infrastructure — creates the conditions for developing an integrated model of sustainable management and promotion of the area, combining environmental protection, cultural value and green energy.
In this context, PANETAIK S.A., in cooperation with the Network’s members, will proceed with the implementation of actions including:
-
the promotion and showcasing of Lake Agyia and the Agyia SHPS as a unified hub of natural and energy interest,
-
the development of environmental education and awareness activities,
-
the promotion of soft forms of tourism (ecotourism, educational tourism),
-
the strengthening of local entrepreneurship through links to the area’s natural and energy assets,
-
the development of digital tools for promotion and mapping,
-
participation in national and European programs for the green transition and sustainable development.
This initiative forms part of PANETAIK S.A.’s broader strategic planning, which aims to strengthen environmental sustainability, promote and harness local natural and cultural resources, and advance a model of green and resilient development for Crete. In this framework, PANETAIK S.A. continues to develop targeted partnerships and innovative actions that boost the local economy, foster innovation and contribute meaningfully to the sustainable management and utilisation of the island’s natural and energy resources.
